Mario and Sonic co-star in Olympic Games

Nintendo and Sega mascots co-star together for the first time ever

Nintendo and Sega fans have pondered over the possibilities for years, and now it's finally happened - Mario and Sonic are to co-star in a new game on Wii: Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games.

In development for Wii and DS, you take control of characters from both the Mario and Sonic universes including Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Mario, Luigi, Yoshi (yes!) and more.

Officially licensed by the International Olympic Committee, you will compete in environments based on the Beijing 2008 Olympics grounds.

The game is said to make innovative use of the Wii and DS control systems when controlling Mario, Sonic and pals in 100 meter sprints or table tennis rallies.

"For the first time, two of the world's greatest games' characters come together to compete in the world's greatest sporting event and we couldn't be more excited", commented Sega's president and chief operating officer, Hisao Oguchi.

Mario creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, says: "Mario and Sonic have been respectful rivals since the early days of video games.

"In fact, for a long time they have been discussing the possibility of one day competing against each other. Now that they have been given the perfect opportunity to meet at the Olympic Games, we may finally learn who is actually faster, Mario or Sonic?"

The game is due for a Christmas 2007 release. Until then, take a look at the title image below and keep 'em peeled for more gameplay details soon.
