OnLive UK release date is 'end of 2011'

Server-based gaming system coming to UK next year

BT has revealed that the UK release date for Cloud gaming system OnLive won't arrive until the end of next year.

The system will launch in the US later this month - with invite emails already sent out to subscribers.

Earlier this year, BT signed an exclusive deal to distribute the service with broadband bundles. It will also be made available to PlusNet and existing broadband customers.

"Over time, as consumer broadband connectivity increases and as games become more complex, we expect cloud-based distribution models for gaming to become increasingly attractive and mainstream," A BT spokesperson told PCR.

"BT is well positioned to help support this transformation. The expectation is that many of the popular games accessible on consoles today will be made available via OnLive. We'll announce further details about our launch plans later this year, but we would hope to make it available by the end of 2011."

So there you have it. We've got a long wait ahead of us.

The platform has won support from Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, Take-Two Interactive, THQ and Warner Bros.

OnLive will offer up to 20 titles at launch include Assassin's Creed II, Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands and Metro 2033.

Microsoft and Sony have both dismissed the threat from OnLive, claiming that the technology is 'not there yet'.
