DS Lite gets US price drop

GBA slot-equipped DS units dropped to a snappy $99.99

Nintendo of America has confirmed it will drop the official price of the older DS Lite console to a cheap and cheerful $99.99 (which converts to £60) in US.

The price drop, a reduction of $30, will come into effect from June 5, giving anyone who fancies a great handheld console (with GBA support intact) cheap access to a library of thousands of games (and 'quit smoking, get healthy' therapy titles).

DS Lites currently retail in UK for around £100 ($164), although you can find them for less if you dig around.

Nintendo has also confirmed that it will give six DS Mario games snazzy new red boxes (pictured). Are they getting a price drop, too? No. Nintendo just wants you to find them more easily.

"From the moment it launched, Nintendo DS Lite hit a sweet spot for consumers in terms of value, experience and fun," said NOA boss Reggie Fils-Aime. "This new price point will introduce Nintendo DS Lite to even more consumers, and the new red packaging will make it easy for them to find their favorite Mario titles."

The new red-boxed titles are: New Super Mario Bros., Mario Kart DS, Super Mario 64 DS, Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Mini-Land Mayhem! and Mario Party DS.

Nintendo has sold more than 48.9 million systems in the Nintendo DS family in the United States alone.
