Bleszinski: I'd hack Kinect if I were a teenager

Epic design chief on user-created software

Epic design chief Cliff Bleszinski has claimed that he would be "hacking" Kinect if he were a young amateur developer.

Speaking at a behind-closed-doors Xbox 360 event at E3 in L.A today - attended by CVG - Bleszinski explained that despite Microsoft paranoia to the contrary, he was a big fan of the motion device.

The platform holder has embraced and publicly applauded popular user-generated 'hacks' of Kinect, although it prefers not to use the 'h' word.

"Can I just say from my end real quick that I just love the way [Microsoft] is embracing this whole hacking community rather than trying to fight it," said Bleszinski. "I think it's so smart to just leverage that and go with it. If I was 17, I'd be hacking it and doing my own version of it. And by the way, the finger tracking is shit hot.

He later added: "I don't understand if there are gamers out there that are weird about Kinect. What's the problem? You know, if you don't like it, don't play it. Coming into this room, I had an interesting conversation where one of the [Microsoft] PR people pulled me aside and said: 'It's come to our attention that, erm, you might not like Kinect.' And I'm like: 'Does anybody read my Twitter feed? I went to the fucking launch of it in New York. I love it.'

"It's [PlayStation] Move that I dog on all the time, with its two goofy looking airplane coming in things, right? Less plastic on my coffe table is a good thing as far as I'm concerned. I'm a fan.

I've been asked about integration into Gears and if we had put it into Gears 3, considering the development timetable, it would have been a tacked on feature. If we were to get around to doing something Kinect-based, we'd want to be dedicated to it and really knock it out of the park."

Microsoft announced a slew of new Kinect information this morning in California at its E3 conference. Get all the news on that through here.
