Modern Warfare 3 was the best-selling game in the US last year, just as was in the UK.
Activision's shooter charted ahead of Just Dance 3 and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim in 2011, with Battlefield 3 and Madden NFL 12 rounding off the top five, according to data from sales tracker the NPD Group.
2010's Call of Duty: Black Ops took the No.6 spot on the chart, followed by Batman: Arkham City, Gears of War 3, Just Dance 2 and Assassin's Creed: Revelations.
NPD also released December's sales chart, which featured seven of the year's best-sellers, including an unchanged top three.
