Resident Evil 6 trailer dissected - 101 screens

A closer look at the action and horror of Capcom's latest Resi offering

Capcom announced Resident Evil 6 today with a juicy trailer full of detail-filled gameplay, story-telling cutscenes and plenty of action. Let's take a closer look.

First up, here's the trailer:

With that out the way, our first impression is 'wow'. That's one jam-packed trailer. A nice mix of horror, loads of action (too much, Resi fans?) and lots to take in.

Zoom

You start out looking at Leon Kennedy pointing a gun at what turns out to be a heavily infected US president - and close friend of Leon's. This is evidently a tough moment for Leon, and one of many hints in the trailer that Resi 6's plot will be a more emotionally involved one than previous games.

Zoom

The first part of the trailer takes focus on Leon's role in the game, which appears to be in US after the bio attack that infected the president spreads to the wider population. You see Leon walking down a dark corridor in a building - reminiscent of the slow-paced and dark horror of Resident Evil 1, and something much requested by fans.

Zoom

Next you see a shot of an urban street with burning cars - this time bringing back memories for fans of Resident Evil 2. We're liking the look of it already at this point.

Leon creeps cautiously down an alley, with the shadows of people/zombies on the wall ahead. They appear to be fast-moving zombies, like the ones in more recent Resi games. Again, all very creepy.

Zoom

A woman of unknown identity claims with apparent remorse that, "It's all my fault, I did this", seemingly about to admit a dark secret to Leon who appears oblivious as he asks, "What are you talking about?" By this point in the game it would seem the two characters have gotten to know each other a little, but Leon is unaware of the woman's direct or indirect involvement in the global crisis at hand.

Zoom

A brief shot of zombies in a rural area suggests not only a mix of environments for Leon's stages but also that there may be zombies of the more traditionally slow, fumbling type.

Zoom

Your first sight of gameplay footage gives players that familiar Resi 4-style over-the-shoulder view as he attempts to gun down incoming zombie hordes in a burning outdoor urban environment. This is the stuff right here, people.

One of the zombies grabs Leon before he fights off the flesh-eater. This, along with a shot later of Leon delivering a brutal spin kick to a zombie's face suggests the importance of melee combat in the sequel.

Zoom

We've not much to say about this giant f***er other than 'holy shit'. That pistol doesn't do much damage before he lifts Leon off his feet. You'll need bigger guns (possibly "at a high price, stranger").

After another look at an intense conversation between Leon and his female companion, the trailer flicks over to China which, as Capcom's announcement revealed earlier, is the setting for Chris Redfield's adventures. And instantly we notice not just a change of scenery but a distinct change in pace at this point.

Zoom

Where Leon's sections appear dark, slow and eery, Chris' time in the spotlight seems more action-focused. Perhaps this is how Capcom has chosen to break up the pace of the new game, transitioning players back and forth between Leon's spooky stages in US and Chris' balls-out action in China, although that's just our speculation at this point. Oh, and it appears there are three characters and locations to play, but more on that later.

Zoom

What makes Chris' stages interesting is the presence of non-infected members of the public. He pushes a cameraman out of the way before charging through the streets as crowds of people flee in the opposite direction away from an apparent threat. It's chaos, and we speculate that protecting (i.e not shooting) innocents could be one of your mission parameters. It's also very Gears of War-like as Chris runs and dives towards cover, and emerges to let off some shots.

Zoom

Then we see this scar-faced bloke - a seemingly cold-hearted mercenary paid to bring the pain, and third playable character in another, snow-covered locale by the looks of it. However, there's evidently more to him than first meets the eye, as it becomes apparent that 'the world needs his blood'. A possible antidote? Seems so...

Zoom

One thing also to note here is his co-operation with the blond chick (Ashley from Resi 4, maybe?). Capcom has confirmed co-op multiplayer and here is where it's most apparent. But looking back through the trailer you'll note that both Leon and Chris have company too; Leon with his mysteriously involved lady-friend and Chris with fellow mercs, setting the game up for persistant co-op mechanics all the way through.

Zoom

Here's another big evil beast, and one that makes numerous appearances in the trailer, which suggests a possible Nemesis-style 'main baddie' - at least for the scar-faced character's section of the game.

Zoom

From here the trailer breaks down into a flurry of action flashes, showing everything from helicopters launching missiles and Chris riding a tank through the streets, to the use of melee weapons, a motorbike, underground sewers, Leon in free fall in what looks like a train/tram carriage, and building-sized beasts. Epic.
