Far Cry 3 gameplay trailer - Dissected

We nail down the Pacifics of the latest footage...

This week, Ubisoft uploaded a colossal five and a half minute Far Cry 3 gameplay trailer that delivers more tropical thrills and spills than a runaway Lilt delivery truck. Since then, we've been pouring over every last frame in our unquenchable thirst for new information.


The latest reveal showcases two very different sides of Far Cry 3. On one hand, it's a heavyweight first-person shooter that looks like it's capable of going round-for-round with Call of Duty. On the other, we spy evidence that Ubisoft are also looking to take on action-adventure games such as Uncharted 3. The trailer begins with our hero Jason Brody spying on a hoard of Vaas' goons. They're guarding a beached cargo ship which has been transformed into a makeshift Radio Tower. Sitting at the very top of the mast is a scrambler that must be destroyed at all costs - or at least that's what Jason's mysterious adviser Willis tells us through an earpiece. Fair enough, let's do it.

But how? There are several different ways you can approach each mission. For example, stealth-fiends can use the debris strewn across the beach as cover and move silently towards their target. More creative options are also available. Apparently one tester found a hang-glider elsewhere on the island and used it to swoop directly onto the radio tower, bypassing the goons entirely. For the purposes of this demo though, we're going in through the front door.

For his opening salvo, Jason swipes a knife from a guard's back pocket and jams it deep into the side of his neck in one swift motion. Then he hurls it directly into the skull of a second guard who was about to turn around to find out what all the squelching is about. It's a totally ninja move, albeit one that's dependent on the hunting knife-shaped lump in his back pocket actually being a hunting knife, rather than a hairbrush or whatever. Far Cry 3 director Dan Hay has confirmed that you can drag bodies out of the line of sight of patrolling guards, so hypothetically you could get in and out of the ship without making a sound (squelching notwithstanding).

But we've only got five minutes to play with here, so Jason decides to save time by going loud. He storms the hull, taking out everyone in his path - a path made that much easier by his foes' predilection for Explosive Red Barrels. Not a lot of evidence of the much-heralded AI here (which routinely makes tactical errors, so your foes seem more human), but in fairness, none of them manage to stay alive for more than a few nanoseconds. We're officially on a rampage.

With everyone aboard now dead, Jason scales the tower unimpeded and duly disables the scrambler. Here we get the first hint of uneasiness in Willis and Jason's relationship - 'You'd better be right about this', our lad groans as he flicks the final switch. Is Jason being used as a pawn in a burgeoning turf war?

Willis moves to assure Jason he's done the right thing, but before the conversation can get any further, reinforcements arrive via hovercraft and Jason is on the move again. He ziplines down to a lower level and blows them out of the southern hemisphere with the help of a nearby sentry gun. Not bad going, considering he's only supposed to be a run-of-the-mill tourist. With skills like this, we bet very few hotels have the front to charge him for an unused safe upon check-out...

It's all very exciting now, so obviously the dubstep has to kick in. However, the only 'drop' we get is the sight of Jase hurling himself into the azure waters in an ultimately successful attempt to shake the remaining forces off his tail. No series does 'the wet stuff' quite like Far Cry, and this scene shows that the threequal upholds the family tradition. Brilliant blue and positively thriving with fish and coral reefs, Far Cry 3's ocean proves that the powerful Cry Engine 3 can render much more than grey Crysis doomscapes. Before we move on to the second half of the trailer, do you guys want to hear an interesting fact about coral reefs? No? Okay then.
