3DS almost doubles year one DS sales total in US

"This platform is built for the long haul," says Nintendo of America's president

Nintendo of America sold 4.5 million 3DS hardware units in the system's first year of availability.

That almost doubles the 2.3 million DS units sold in the elder handheld's opening 12 months, although it should be pointed out that 3DS received a hefty price cut less than six months into its US lifecycle.

Over 100 3DS games were released in the portable's first year, selling a combined total of over nine million units, versus just 58 releases for DS and five million unit sales.

Total 3DS hardware, software and accessory sales generated $1.2 billion in year one, compared to $540 million for DS.

Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime said: "Nintendo 3DS closes its first year with a lengthy list of accomplishments but we're still just scratching the surface.

"With a massive line-up of first and third-party games and more on the way, a budding library of entertainment options and an engaged and growing installed base, Nintendo 3DS has an incredibly bright future. We're just getting started but this platform is built for the long haul."
