Game: Call of Duty Black Ops 2

Likelihood of E3 2012 showing: Certain

Somewhere, in a quiet corner of some sterile office, an accountant is crying. Because, if there's one videogame franchise that didn't need to change, financially speaking at least, it's Call of Duty.

Ever since 2007 when the now mostly disbanded Infinity Ward brought it shooting and screaming into modernity, CoD's been nothing short of a cultural phenomenon year upon record-breaking year. But, putting money aside for a minute, the truth is, Call of Duty did need to change - desperately.

Despite a consistently entertaining and superbly paced campaign, and supremely polished multiplayer matches that nightly host tens of thousands, bonding both together under a still-impressive 60 frames-per-second, it had played its hand. What's left after the fifth slow-mo door breach, or another on-rails turret section, or umpteenth helicopter killstreak? Black Ops 2 is the first game in half a decade to understand this.

2025. That's the year. It's a Cold War for a colder age, this time China and America the nations feeling a little standoffish. Following a mysterious cyberattack on their stock exchange, China bans the export of rare earth elements. Material used in laser-guidence systems, nuclear batteries and phosphors.
