Street Fighter X Tekken sales 'cannibalized' by crowded market

Too many fighting games in so little time

Capcom has blamed the release of too many fighting games recently for 'cannibalizing' sales of Street Fighter X Tekken.

Zoom

"Sales of 'Street Fighter X Tekken' have fallen short of our plan," the publisher said in an investors Q&A today.

"We believe one of causes is cannibalism because of the large number of other games in this genre that were launched within a short time," it went on.

Let's see. Since Street Fighter IV hit consoles in early 2009, Capcom ALONE has released 'Super' and 'Arcade Edition' versions of SFIV, as well as '3D Edition' on 3DS and 'Volt' on iOS, plus Marvel Vs Capcom 3 and Ultimate Marvel VS Capcom 3, online-enabled remakes of Street Fighter 3: Third Strike and Street Fighter 2, and various other retro releases.

Then there's Soul Calibur 5 from Namco, along with the iOS remake of SC1, and the new Mortal Kombat from NetherRealm - to name just a couple of fighters from other developers. Dead or Alive 5 is on its way too.

Capcom, then, may have gone a bit overboard with the whole 'revival of the fighting genre'.
