Max Payne 3 beats fellow new entry Diablo 3 to take the spot on the UK all formats chart for the week ended May 19.
The gap between Rockstar's currently console-only title and Blizzard's PC and Mac one is just 8,000 sales, according to Chart-Track. It should be noted that Chart-Track doesn't track digital sales, which could have pushed Diablo 3 further up the chart, but also that the game had a three day head start on Max Payne 3 by releasing last Tuesday.
Max Payne 3 is the first game in the series to debut at No.1, outperforming the launch week of October 2003's Max Payne 2 by almost ten to one. The Xbox 360 version of the game accounted for 58 percent of sales and the PS3 one the remainder.
Former chart toppers FIFA Street, Sniper Elite V2 and FIFA 12 round off the top five.
