Microsoft app 'will stream Xbox 360 games onto iPhones and tablets'

Rumoured 'Companion app' may eventually offer OnLive-like tablet access

Microsoft is braced to open up its Xbox 360 ecosystem to tablets and smartphones, a new report suggests.


According to a growing body of speculation, Microsoft will soon launch the so-called Xbox Live Companion; a tablet and mobile app that plays additional content in collaboration with a game running on the Xbox 360.

It is believed that the tablets and phones will sync through a Wi-Fi connection.

According to news site Kotaku, the Companion will be available to all Xbox Live users, though Gold Subscribers will be given "enhanced features".

Microsoft has not verified the claim. A spokesperson was unavailable to comment at the time of going to press.

The Kotaku report claimed that the companion application may be be revealed later today at Microsoft's E3 press conference. It also suggested that future plans for the Companion is to allow full game streaming on tablets in a manner similar to OnLive.
