Take a tour of the newest rival to the iPad

Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer held a press conference yesterday in California to unveil the company's first own-brand tablet computer.

Known as 'Surface', the slate will come in two models; one powered by an ARM- processor, the other an Intel chip, and both working with the upcoming Windows 8 operating system.

Microsoft is establishing the device as a direct contender to the market-winning iPad.

The Xbox firm hopes it can promote Surface as superior to the iPad by virtue of offering a device that can run standard applications such as its own Office programs and Photoshop.
