Miyamoto examining non-game business opportunities

Dev maestro 'looking at the future of the Japanese movie industry'

Shigeru Miyamoto is researching possible Nintendo business opportunities outside of games, the renowned game developer has said.

Participating at Nintendo's annual investor meeting, Miyamoto was asked about how directly he is involved in game production at Nintendo. While clarifying that he is still involved in certain aspects of games development, the Zelda creator said that he is deliberating other entertainment mediums.

"I often think of other things, such as what the future of the Japanese movie industry will be like. I do not have any concrete visions yet, but I am trying to keep my eyes on a variety of fields and to find any small possibilities for Nintendo to be involved in one way or the other," he said.

The remarks are not intended as a declaration that Nintendo will imminently be working on bespoke films and TV content, though they do suggest Nintendo is prepared to venture in this direction.

Miyamoto pointed to Nintendo's recent Audioguide Louvre app for Nintendo 3DS - a free download that acts as a private tour for visitors of the Louvre museum - as an example of non-games business opportunities.

"The [Audioguide Louvre] has not made money yet, but it has the potential to be one of our core businesses in the future," he said.
