Xbox Live membership 'jumps 15 per cent in single year'

Total subscription numbers thought to be above 40 million

The total Xbox Live subscriber base has sharply increased in the past year, Microsoft has claimed.

Though official figures have not been disclosed, the entertainment giant said the total Xbox Live user base was fifteen per cent higher year-on-year.

It is unclear to what extent this increase was driven by paid Gold accounts and free Silver accounts.

In February, the company claimed it has an audience of more than 40 million Xbox Live subscribers. Approximately 67 million have been sold since the system launched in November 2005.

On Thursday Microsoft reported that its revenue during the April to June period rose by 4 per cent to $18 billion.

However, the company also reported an overall after writing off some of the value of its advertisements business.
