3DS sales hit 19 million ahead of 3DS XL launch

While lifetime Wii sales creep towards 100 million

Nintendo has sold 19 million 3DS units since the handheld launched in Japan last February.


The platform holder shifted 1.86 million 3DS units in its first financial quarter ended June 30, 2012, up 162 percent compared to the same period last year. 3DS software sales came in at 7.39 million, versus 4.53 million last year, and now stand at 52.81 million life-to-date.

Nintendo also sold 710,000 Wii units during the quarter, down from 1.56 million last year and 3.04 million in 2010. Lifetime sales of the console stand at 96.56 million units. Software sales totalled 8.47 million units, down from 13.44 million in 2011, taking lifetime sales to 826.93 million.

Quarterly DS sales totalled 540,000 units, compared to 1.44 million last year, taking lifetime sales to 152.05 million. 8.48 million DS games were sold, compared to 12.44 million last year, and 908.79 million have been sold life-to-date.

Nintendo reported a £143 million loss for the three month period ended June 30, but the battling platform holder says it is encouraged by 3DS sales.
