Sony's second home console hit stores on March 4, 2000 in Japan, October 26 in North America and November 24 in Europe. The follow up to the hardware giant's first forray into gaming sold and shipped around 500,000 in North America in just one weekend, according to reports.
Japanese consumers were seemingly just as eager to get it and by day ten it had moved about a million units. Following the launch it was almost impossible to walk into a store and buy one in any of the territories it was available. The empty store shelves forced desperate gamers to pay extortionate prices on eBay. The PS2 has been crowned as the best selling console of all time, having sold over 154 million units worldwide.
