SWTOR free-to-play switch was 'the right decision', says SOE

SOE president supports BioWare's decision to introduce free option

Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley has said BioWare's made the right move adding a free-to-play option for its struggling MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic.

"It is the only way to go for new games," he said in a recent Reddit Q&A (thanks GamesIndustry).

"It was the right decision for SWTOR (which is a fantastic game). Wait till you see our next round of games after [Planetside 2]," he added.

On another note, Smedley went on to deem any talk of PC gaming's decline as "idiotic garbage.

"I hate it when people talk about the decline of the PC industry. It's idiotic garbage spouted by morons that can't count where the players are playing. It's not like League of Legends reports numbers to NPD. The players are playing F2P games on the PC not going to retail," he said.

EA announced the introduction of a free-to-play option for the Star Wars MMO as it admitted a further decline in subscribers, dipping below the 1 million mark.
