Washington studio ArenaNet has taken a proactive approach to managing antisocial behaviour on its acclaimed MMO Guild Wars 2 - by suspending players for three days if they are found using offensive language.
While many online games are rife with distasteful and provocative messages, often its administrators will only censor certain words through automatic filtering systems. ArenaNet, however, is outright suspending users who make insulting or racist remarks.
And in a daring move to explain the studio's decision, an online support representative has engaged with the game's community on Reddit to answer any questions from suspended users.
"To keep Guild Wars 2 a pleasant place to be, we take action against racist names, hate speech, and other unacceptable behaviour," the support representative said.
"We have suspended some accounts involved in the use of offensive character names or inappropriate chat. The number of account blocks is miniscule: less than .001% of our total player base."
In response to this message, multiple suspended players offered their names and asked why they were suspended. In turn, the support admin cited specific comments from each user.
- "Get the fucking cavern scutter energies you fuckasses."
- "This isn't Africa, you don't adopt black kids."
- "the worm is fucking hard if you're a fucking mentalpatient no we fucking dont you can take a keep with 5 people if you're not a fucking dickhead"
- "I am a dog you nigger"
- "leave faggots the griffin is mine fa ggots"
Other Reddit users went on to criticise the suspended players for not realising that the language is not appropriate.
The full release of Guild Wars 2 is now available on PC and early reviews are notably positive. CVG's Guild Wars 2 review (levels 1 to 20) said the game showed extraordinary promise.
ArenaNet is owned by MMO giant NCsoft.
