iPhone 5 goes on sale in UK, US, Australia

Release day arrives amid claims Apple device has cleared 2 million pre-orders

The iPhone 5 has officially gone on sale in North America, UK and Australia today, amid Apple claims that pre-orders for the device have shattered 2 million.

The company has promised that the majority of pre-orders "will be delivered" to customers in time for today's iPhone 5 release date, but added that "many are scheduled to be delivered in October".

iPhone 5 features a bigger screen than its predecessors, a smaller dock connector and metal casing, along with enhanced first-party apps via the new iOS 6 update, and significantly faster processors which Apple says makes it capable of playing "console quality" games. An official iPhone 5 trailer offers an overview of the new device's key features.
