Ubisoft: full price retail titles could learn from free-to-play model

Ubisoft hasn't shied away from the free-to-play model, with titles like The Settlers Online and Ghost Recon Online funded predominantly through micro-transactions.

According to an investor conference call though, Ubisoft's CEO Alain Martinez believes it may be possible for the next generation's full priced retail games to learn from the free-to-play model.

"There will be free-to-play on consoles," he said. "But in the future, with games like Sleeping Dogs, we could see more opportunity for $60 games to learn from the free-to-play model.

"The next generation will offer more and more item-based content. This will benefit our games' profitability."

Ubisoft are expecting a 20 million euros increase in profit in 2013 from free-to-play and casual games.
