iPad mini mass production begins - WSJ

Mass production of iPad mini has kicked off ahead of the unannounced device's expected launch later this month or early next.

That's according to a Wall Street Journal report (subscription), which claims (via 9to5mac):

"Apple Inc.'s Asian component suppliers have started mass production of a new tablet computer smaller than the current iPad, people with knowledge of the situation said, as the Silicon Valley company tries to stay competitive against rivals such as Google Inc. and Amazon.com Inc.that are offering smaller, less-expensive alternatives to the iPad."

The report goes on to back up previous iPad mini rumours suggesting LG and AU Optronics began producing the iPad mini's 1024×768 7.85-inch display last month.

Earlier this week sources told Fortune that Apple will send out press invitations to an iPad mini reveal event on Wednesday October 10, then hold said event a week later before possibly launching the new tablet on November 2.

An October iPad mini release date has previously been widely rumoured.

Alleged iPad mini photos were published online last month.
