Kickstarter opens door for UK inventors

Online service also set to streamline international shipping options

Kickstarter has announced new plans to allow UK inventors and entrepreneurs to submit their proposals on the crowdfunding website.

On October 30th, Britons will be able to publish their own ideas and generate international backing for them.

The online service sparked a crowdfunding craze after Los Angeles studio Double Fine broke new ground and raised $3.3 million for its Double Fine Adventure (working title).

Since then the service has raised millions for various games development and hardware manufacturers.

However, UK companies have been locked out because the underpinning funding system for Kickstarter is based on Amazon's North American payment service. But Kickstarter has now expanded that pay system work in UK, opening all opportunities for British companies.

There are no funding constraints between the UK and US; an inventor from either nation can get backing from both sides. British projects will be listed in pounds sterling.

Meanwhile, the online service has also launched a streamlined international shipping option for both US and UK projects.

"Creators have been asking backers to add international shipping costs to their pledges for years, and it wasn't uncommon for backers to miss the instructions. Today's update makes it clearer when the creator has requested that international backers add an additional amount to their pledges," Kickstarter said.
