Microsoft's console shifted 270,000 units last month in the States, representing a 49 per cent share of current gen console sales, according to NPD data passed along by the platform holder.

Nintendo and Sony didn't release specific hardware sales figures, but Scott Moffitt, NoA's executive VP of sales and marketing, said "3DS XL continues to galvanize our 3DS business. Hardware sales are up, software sales are increasing exponentially and the attach rate is growing stronger every month."

NPD analyst Anita Frazier said: "Hardware sales are up on an average sales per week basis compared to August for the NDS, 3DS, PS3, Vita and 360, which points to momentum heading into the holiday season."

Nintendo has confirmed a Wii U release date of November 18 in the US, and Frazier said the upcoming console "has the potential to reinvigorate retail sales of hardware".

Madden NFL 13 was the top-selling game in the US during September.
