Disney readying cross-universe Skylanders rival - report

Ambitious project toy and game project detailed

A report has suggested Disney Interactive has its eyes set on a slice of Activision's Skylanders pie, and will take a grab at it next year with 'Disney Infinity' for Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, Wii U and Nintendo 3DS.

Fansite Stitch Kingdom claims to have seen "a video produced for retailers which will be used to educate them on the product as well as familiarize them with the content".

It states Disney Infinity, formerly known as 'Toy Box', will allow players to transport characters to virtual worlds by using character plastic tokens to interact with "a flat device" that connects to consoles via USB and infrared.

A starter pack will apparently contain a reader, three character tokens for Monsters Inc star Sulley, Captain Jack Sparrow and Mr. Incredible, and other such goods.

Additional characters will reportedly be released later, rumoured to be Mike Wazowski, Randall, Hector Barbossa, Davy Jones, Mrs. Incredible, Syndrome, Dash, Violet, Woody, Jack Skellington, Agent P, Rapunzel, Anna, Ice Queen, Sorcerer Mickey, Tow Mater and Francesco Bernoulli.

Meanwhile, landmark tokens can be placed on the reader to open up 'play sets', which players can explore.

At launch, a 'Radiator Springs' (from Pixar's Cars) with Lightning McQueen and Holly Shiftwell will be available. 'The Lone Ranger' with the Lone Ranger and Tonto; 'Toy Story in Space' with Jessie and Buzz Lightyear; and 'Phineas and Ferb' with Phineas and Ferb are the first expansion packs expected.
