Nintendo Network accounts tied to single Wii U

Players unable to transfer ID to a new console or sign in on a friend's console

Nintendo Network accounts are currently tied to a single Wii U console.


This seemingly means players won't be able to transfer their account data to a new system should their original break or go missing, resulting in the loss of any stored game progress and digital purchases. We've contacted Nintendo for clarification.

A Nintendo Network account is required to access the system's online features such as the eShop and Miiverse.

"A Nintendo Network Account can only be used on the console where it was created," Nintendo confirmed. "In the future, you will be able to use your Nintendo Network Account with future Nintendo consoles and other devices, such as PCs."

Wii U supports up to 12 individual Nintendo Network IDs per console, which enables each member of the family to have his or her own unique identity on the system. Products purchased by one user can be played by other account holders on the same system.

Nintendo's management of online security measures has come under scrutiny after it emerged this weekend that one new Wii U customer apparently hacked into the console's online platform just hours after buying the system.
