Peter Molyneux hits Kickstarter with Populous reinvention 'Godus'

22cans planning the ultimate god game with help from crowd funding

Fable creator and 22cans boss Peter Molyneux has launched a Kickstarter fund for 'Godus', an "innovative reinvention of Populous".

According to the Kickstarter page, which seeks £450,000 of funding, "It's an innovative reinvention of Populous, the original god game and delivers exciting global co-operation, competition, creation and destruction to a whole new generation."

Godus will apparently draw on everything the studio is learning from its iOS "experiments", which began with the global cube-chiseling app, Curiosity. But it will also draw from Molyneux's previous games.

"Populous was created over 22 years ago, and we believe that to date, nothing has come close to emulating its powerfully godlike experience," says the Kickstarter page. "It's this experience we aim to reimagine.

"GODUS blends the power, growth and scope of Populous with the detailed construction and multiplayer excitement of Dungeon Keeper and the intuitive interface and technical innovation of Black & White. The original Populous hailed from the 8-bit era but GODUS will use the most modern technology the world has to offer."

Listing 'game features', the developer promises "a living world, unique and detailed", adding that "it's a world you influence, whether you're good or evil".

It goes on, "As you flourish and build your own cult, you'll engage in pitched battles with other gods and their cults. It's a multiplayer power-struggle the way it should be."

The game is targeting a release "in less than a year from now" for PC and mobile devices.

At the time of writing, the fund had amassed £16,352 from 511 backers.
