Previous court rulings in the ongoing patent dispute had raised the possibility of bans on the sale of Microsoft's products, but the final say hinged on the ruling of Judge Robart ruling in Seattle, the BBC reports.

Handset maker Motorola is claiming that the Xbox maker should be paying the firm up to £2.5 billion a year for use of its connectivity and video-coding patents used in products such as games consoles, while Microsoft says the technologies are only worth a fee of $1 million annually.

Judge Robart ruled that the patents in question are inventions which Motorola has recognised as critical to industry standards and which should therefore be licensed on fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory terms. The case will now continue to determine suitable royalty rates.
