Monkey Island franchise could have a future

When Disney bought Lucasfilm in October they also acquired LucasArts, the developer of Monkey Island. The game's creator, Ron Gilbert, is now looking at contacting Disney to obtain the rights.

Ron Gilbert disclosed to Eurogamer that he would consider talking to Disney "at some point" in the hope of winning back the rights to Monkey Island.

Gilbert isn't ready to put the franchise to bed, stating "I would love to get the rights back to Monkey Island and be able to really make the game I want to make."

Concerns have been raised about the future of Monkey Island, when Disney said that LucasArts was to focus on becoming a casual game developer.

If Gilbert is successful in getting the rights to Monkey Island back, it's likely the next game would be made at Double Fine with Tim Schafer, "if Tim doesn't fire me," Gilbert said.
