PlayStation 3 sales have hit 30 million units across Europe and the PAL territories, Sony has claimed.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) covers 109 territories across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Oceania.

The 30 million total was reached on December 17, 2012, the platform holder said today.

"This is a major milestone for us and clearly shows just how popular the PlayStation brand and products are within Europe and the PAL territories", said SCEE CEO Jim Ryan.

"We are really pleased with the success of the PS3 system over the last six years, and are committed to continuing our support of the platform with high quality products and titles that are of the calibre that PlayStation fans have come to expect."

Five million UK PS3 sales were reached in October 2012, while worldwide lifetime PS3 sales stand at around 70 million units, roughly the same as global Xbox 360 sales.

Speaking to CVG earlier this year, PlayStation UK boss Fergal Gara said he believed PS3 could do significant business this Christmas, due in part to the JK Rowling-backed Wonderbook peripheral and redesigned PS3.

"If you look at the upcoming Christmas market, the Wii will be selling in very low volumes - it's on its way out - and the Wii U will arrive, but it will bring in a relatively small number of early adopter consumers. We see ourselves well positioned for the casual market who won't buy Wii U on day one," he said.

"We've got a wow moment, we feel. I remember when people picked up the Wii controller for the first time, that was a big moment, it was a casual market breakthrough, but we thing we've got a casual market breakthrough as well with Wonderbook and the lowest priced PS3 yet."
