"On the last day of 2012, Minecraft Xbox 360 Edition hit 5 million copies sold," the studio's business developer Daniel Kaplan said on Twitter. "Crazy! Amazing! Great way to end the year :) Thanks!"
The game previously broke XBLA records by selling more copies than any other title in its first 24 hours of availability on the platform. It went on to sell over a million copies in less than a week.
Here's what we said in our 9/10 Minecraft: Xbox 360 review: "Whether you're mining, crafting, building, or fighting - either alone, or with friends - there's nothing quite like Minecraft. An accomplished, streamlined port that's a perfect fit for Xbox 360."
The indie game phenomenon had sold about 17.5 million copies across all platforms as of mid-December 2012.
