Capcom profit up, but Resident Evil 6 fails to meet expectations

Capcom has announced positive financial results for the first three quarters of its financial year ending March 31 2013.

For the nine months ended December 31 2012, net sales were up 44.6 per cent year-over-year, while net income leaped 104.9 per cent to 6,645 million yen.

The results aren't reflective of the worse than expected performance of Resident Evil 6, which "surpassed" 4.8 million sales during the nine month period.

"Despite recording brisk sales when it debuted, [Resident Evil 6] subsequently lost its momentum, resulting in the failure to achieve planned sales and fulfil its role as a driver of sales expansion," Capcom said.

"On the other hand, Dragon's Dogma enjoyed popularity exceeding expectations in the more profitable domestic market, becoming a million-seller, [something] unprecedented among recent new brand games developed and published by the company."

Capcom also said Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, its first game for Wii U, became "a smash hit" following its December 2012 release.

The publisher said in November that it plans to increase its internal development staff from 1,500 to 2,500 over the next decade, allowing it to move outsourced operations in-house in a bid to improve the quality of its output.
