Activision promises to mix up Skylanders with Swap Force

Activision has announced Skylanders: Swap Force, the next instalment in its hugely popular toy oriented gaming franchise.

Swap Force's hook is the ability to mix and match the top and bottom halves of toys to create new characters. Portal Masters will be able to use the new characters to create "250 unique combinations," it's said.

The next wave of Skylanders includes 16 new Swap Force characters, 16 new Skylanders and 16 new versions of classic characters. Eight new LightCore characters have also been created.

Swap Force characters can be played with both Skylanders Spyro's Adventure and Skylanders Giants. Activision has also added the ability to jump.

"With Skylanders SWAP Force, we are pushing the genre we created forward with another big innovation: customization," said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing.

"The idea that kids can customize their own characters in the physical world, and have their unique combinations recognized in the virtual world, is an idea as big as the concept of bringing toys to life itself."

US Skylanders franchise sales have surpassed $500 million, according to data from retail monitor the NPD Group released by Activision today.
