Dead Space 3's co-operative component was added around halfway through development, according to a producer at Visceral.

In a GDC session focused on creating emotionally engaging stories in challenging situations, Dead Space 3 producer Chuck Beaver reportedly revealed that the series' first co-operative mode was introduced relatively late during production.

According to Xbox 360 Achievements, he said: "I had to go from single-player to co-op, in the middle of production. How about that?"

We said of co-op in our Dead Space 3 review: "In the end, co-op mode ends up mirroring the single-player experience: slick, entertaining, with the occasional moment of brilliance, marred by a lack of tension, pacing and pant-filling scares."

Earlier this month, EA moved to deny rumours that it has effectively axed the series after Dead Space 3 missed its sales targets, noting that it's "proud of the game" and "the franchise remains an important IP".
